End – of – week colder temperatures are expected in Massachusetts, and Thursday morning commutes in some areas of the state could be hazardous due to freezing rain.
For portions of Worcester, Middlesex, Franklin, Hampshire, and Hampden counties, a winter weather advisory is in force.
According to Cindy Fitzgibbon, chief meteorologist for StormTeam 5, “these freezing rain events, they can have big impacts and make things very slippery, and I think we are setting up for a light glaze of ice tomorrow morning, as rain is going to start transitioning over to freezing rain and drizzle.”
Particularly in the regions to the north and west of Boston, icing will be a problem.
The changeover from rain to freezing rain will occur in the early morning hours, according to Fitzgibbon. “Overnight rain will occur at times, and by 5 a.m. Thursday, most places will be above freezing,” he said. “A colder pattern is changing,” said the weatherman.
Most of the state will experience lows in the 30s.
Fitzgibbon predicted that there would be periods of freezing drizzle throughout the day.
On Friday, the temperature drops and there is a chance of a few snow showers. For the weekend, the skies will be clear, and Saturday and Sunday’s highs will be in the upper 30s in the sun.
